Design Trends

For those of you trying to sell your home or those who are thinking about selling, certain improvements can be made that will make your home more appealing to buyers and possibly get more money in your pocket. Updating your kitchen and bathrooms usually gives the best return on your investment but, before making any improvements, it’s important to look at trends that appeal to buyers in the market today. In the Chicago Tribune, Anne Colby of the Los Angeles Times had some great suggestions based on a style report that was just released by the National Kitchen and Bath Association:

Grey, white and off white color schemes are popular.

Grey, beige, bone, white and off white color schemes are popular.

Microwave drawers and kitchen faucets that are activated by touch or touchless are great features.

Soaking tubs, free-standing tubs and steam showers are gaining popularity while jetted tubs are on the decline.

Cherry, maple and alder wood cabinets are the most popular and walnut is gaining in popularity. Glass cabinet doors are still a great choice. For painted cabinetry, white is still the preferred choice.

Shower benches, high-standing toilets and higher vanities are sought after.

Under mount sinks and satin nickel finishes on faucets and hardware are highly rated.

Quartz and recycled materials are giving granite close competition as favorite choices for countertops and vanities.

The transitional design style (a combo of traditional and contemporary styles with simple but sophisticated lines and a general lack of color and ornamentation) has gained popularity over more traditional styles.
