Let's Go Antiquing!

For many, a pleasant way to spend an afternoon is to walk around and browse through an antique or second-hand shop. With all the cool design ideas, the sky’s the limit as to what awesome pieces you can find for decorating your living spaces. While you’re browsing, here are some things that experienced treasure hunters and designers keep their eyes out for:

·        Unusual furniture pieces that appeal to you. Even if you find the coolest chairs but the matching table is missing, don’t be afraid to mix and match. There’s some design leeway when you put rooms together. If they coordinate, your style will shine through and you will have a unique room.

·        Any items that hold or provoke sentimental memories are great ways to add your personality to your décor.

·        If you are in a crafty mood find an antique piece that can be partially modernized. Something like an old dresser or table than could be painted in a pretty color. Or a chair that you could recover the seat cushion in a pretty fabric. It’s the blend of old and new that makes your room interesting.

·        Old mirrors with pretty, ornate frames are easy ways to add visual interest to any wall.

·        Colorful rugs such as old Persian rugs are great because they add a pop of color in any room.

·        Sometimes you fall in love with a piece but when you get home, you have nowhere to put it. So, it’s a good idea to look for pieces that could serve multiple purposes or fit into several areas of your home. That way when you are ready to place it somewhere, you will have a few spots to choose from.

·        Make sure that whatever you are buying, it is well made. Items can always be repaired before they go into your home but if the construction is shoddy to begin with, it’s not worth the time and money to repair it.

It’s that mixture of old and new that makes a room visually interesting and gives your home personality. But most of all it’s just plain fun to spend a few hours with some friends and go “treasure” hunting!
