Summer Projects

If only summer could be all about fun in the sun and lemonade. Unfortunately things still need to get done and projects around the house are plenty. For good upkeep and maintenance there are many home projects that should be done about once a year. Here are a few of them:

·         Inspect the seals on windows and doors. If you see any gapping or deterioration, it’s time to re-seal using the appropriate caulk or weather stripping for the job. This will not only save you money on your utility bills but also is important for keeping the elements from ruining the structure of your home.

·         Clean out the dryer vent. Depending on the length of your vent, you may need to call in a professional for this job. Don’t forget to vacuum out the hose that connects to the back of your dryer. Clogged dryer vents are a common cause of house fires.

·         Wash your deck or patio. Use a stiff bristle brush, soap and water and a little elbow grease, or use a power washer to get the grime off. After it’s dry, stain it if needed, or use a sealer to protect it. While you’re at it scrub the outdoor furniture too!

·         Maintain your chimney. Depending on how much you use your fireplace, make sure your chimney is clean. A chimney fire can occur if it’s not properly maintained.

·         Clean the garage. Organize and declutter. Get rid of broken or damaged items that are just taking up space. Sweep and clean the floor of dirt and debris. Check your owner’s manual for your garage door and properly lubricate it if needed.

So put your drink down and get out of that hammock. Try to check some of these chores off your ‘To Do’ list. Properly maintaining your home will save you money in the long run and help to retain its value.
