Protect Your Family & Investment

Now that you’ve bought your new home and you’re all moved in make sure your home is protected and will protect you and your family while you slumber at night. Even if you live in an area with a low crime rate, you’ll rest easier if you follow these tips:

·        Buy deadbolt locks and make sure your doors are solid. Hopefully when you first moved in, you bought new locks, preferably deadbolts. Other locks such as button ones can be easily opened with the swipe of a credit card or even opened with a good kick. Deadbolts will at least make it harder for a robber to get inside your home. A solid wood or steel door will also offer a lot more protection. If you have a sliding glass door, a simple thick dowel rod cut to fit and placed in the track can offer a second line of defense making it harder to force that door open. To make your home even more secure, think about installing an alarm system or security cameras.

·        Don’t leave windows and doors unlocked or open. This may seem obvious, but research shows that most burglars enter through an unlocked door or window.

·        Make sure your property is well lit at night. If done properly, this will add curb appeal and extra protection as most thieves don’t want a spotlight on them. You can even install motion activated lights for areas where you don’t want brightness all the time (such as near a bedroom window). Also, if you go on vacation, install timers on key lights around the home so that they turn off and on at normal times of the day. This helps make your home look occupied and not an easy target for a burglar casing the neighborhood.

·        Get to know your neighbors. Neighbors can be great (especially the nosey ones) when it comes to a little extra home security. You can let them know to keep an eye on your home if you plan on being away. They can also pick up any mail or newspapers that may pile up while you’re gone which is a telltale sign for a thief.

Home security is not rocket science but if done properly will give you a little more peace of mind so that you can truly relax in your new home.
