Mother's Advice

In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Back then it was a day to hang the American flag out to honor all the hardworking moms of our country. Today we all celebrate our moms a little differently but the intent is still the same.

I’m grateful to my mom for all the great advice throughout the years but I was especially grateful when I had children of my own. She was there to help me from the day my babies were born and stayed with me during those stressful first days. She still gives me advice and my kids are now 14 and 12.

In honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday, I asked the agents here at ChangingStreets.com, “What are some of the best pieces of advice your mother has given you?”

My mom has always said, “You don’t like something, do something about it!” My husband says my mom is the toughest person he knows and we should all have bracelets that say, “What would Carol Murtha do?” She doesn’t sit back and take anything! She is an amazing example of a GREAT mom!! – Shannon Jones

We were always told not to say hate. It meant that you wished someone harm. I also always told my kids that and to this day none of us (my sisters~ my kids ~ my nieces and nephews) can say we hate someone without getting corrected and then taking it back and saying ok I dislike them. My mom also always said, “It doesn't matter what your outside looks like if your insides are ugly.”  - Kim Babcock

“Just because you’re short, don’t let anyone push you around. They put their pants on the same way you do, one leg at a time.” – Brenda Gumpp

“Don’t fight with your husband at night… go to bed, rest and things are always better in the morning.” – Carol Murtha

As we get older we realize just how much advice and wisdom our moms gave to us. Time really does fly by so it’s nice to take a moment to thank all of our wonderful moms out there. Happy Mother’s Day!
