Home Improvements That Stand the Test of Time

Owning a home requires a little work (ok, a lot of work!) in terms of maintenance and upkeep. However, there are a few home improvements that once done should last for pretty much the life of your home (barring any natural disasters!) and add value with great return on investment.

Replace your roof. If your roof is at the age where it needs replacing, do your research and buy quality shingles. Certain companies now offer “lifetime” shingles. These types of shingles are made with special materials that are more durable, last longer and are environmentally friendly as well. Choose a color that compliments your house. Light colored shades will deflect the heat of the sun a little better than darker shingles which may save you money on your utility bills. Some companies even offer lifetime warranties but be sure to read the fine print.

Install wood flooring. Quality wood flooring can last up to 100 years or more with proper care. It never goes out of style and is pretty easy to maintain. If and when you go to sell your home, wood flooring is always attractive to buyers.

Install a beautiful front door. We’ve touched on this one before. It’s well worth the money to buy an attractive, well made front door for your home. Choosing one that compliments the style of your home will immediately add curb appeal which is always a plus if and when you’re ready to sell.

These types of home improvements are no brainers. Once they are completed, all you have to do is pretty much stand back and admire yourself for making smart choices.
