Decorating with Red

When I think of Valentine’s Day I think of the color red. Red is the color of love and romance, right? Maybe. It can also be the color of aggression and anger. In good home design there’s a fine balance between too little and too much but when red is used the right way the results are usually stunning.

Choosing a shade of red that goes with your design style is one factor to think about. Another thing to consider is what sort of mood or energy are you going for? Here are some ideas to get you started:

·        If you’re not ready to fully commit with paint, use different red accents such as an area rug, pillows, throws, candles, picture frames, red artwork, etc. Red usually draws your eye so be sure you are drawing people’s attention to things you want them to notice.

·        If you do decide to use red paint, use it judiciously. You might only want to paint one accent wall, or maybe a backsplash in the kitchen, or the back wall in a cupboard. Too much (of any color) can become very oppressive.

·        Choose the right shade of red for the design style in your home. For example, if your design style is more traditional, deeper burgundy reds will go well. If country is your design style then maybe a shade that’s more rusty and rustic and also “barn” reds will fit right in.

·        For the outside of your house, a red front door becomes a nice focal point and really draws the eye. (In some European countries people paint their front door red when their mortgage is paid off!) You can also use red accents outside such as planters, shutters and of course red flowers in the spring and summer months.

In feng shui color decorating, if the color red is used too much it can cause angry outbursts, over stimulation and restlessness. So just use it thoughtfully and carefully. You don’t want too much of a good thing!
