Buying a Home During the Holidays

Dec. 18, 2015 | Written by: Lori

The winter holiday season is not typically the busiest time of year for the housing market but there are a few good reasons to buy a home during this time.

·         The potential pool of buyers looking for homes is smaller which means you have less competition if you find a house you like. If you have less competition you may be able to haggle with the seller a little more as well.

·         What tends to be true for houses that go up for sale at this time of year is that the owner has a need to sell their home for one reason or another. This is not always true but typically most people do not want the hassle of showings during the busy holiday season. This need to sell attitude or urgency may result in a better deal for the buyer. The seller may be willing to negotiate a little more, especially if there’s a lack of interested buyers.

·         If you start your real estate adventure a little earlier in the season you may be able to close on your home quicker. All parties involved in the transaction from the lenders and title companies to the real estate agents will be motivated to get the deal closed before the end of the year for various reasons. And, with fewer closings happening at this time of year, there should be plenty of time to get the deal done.

·         You may be able to find deals on various things at this time of year such as moving companies. Winter is probably a slow season for them and you may get a better price for their services. (Also, moving during the colder months of the year means less sweat when you’re unpacking all those heavy boxes and moving furniture around!)
