Back to the Bricks

My sister lives in Royal Oak and every year sometimes weeks before the Dream Cruise weekend arrives, people will set up their lawn chairs on either side of Woodward and watch traffic. There are a few classics cruising along with all the other cars traveling up and down the street but not that many at this point. This does not seem to deter the die hard fans.  They sit out there for hours. I guess I just don’t get it.

When it comes to these classic car events I think the fun part would be in the driving. I would rather be the one on the road, in the driver’s seat of a beautiful car with music blaring while thousands of admiring eyes watch. That doesn’t sound the least bit narcissistic does it? It’s fun to be the center of attention every once in a while. I do get that.

One of my favorite classics is the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible. I love the tail fins and chrome detail on this car. My knowledge of any classic car (or any car for that matter) is zero but I think I do have an eye for good design and I just like the lines of it. The color would be bright red and I’d be wearing pointy cat’s eye sunglasses for good effect.

I also love the 1963 Lincoln Continental with suicide doors. This is the car that the boy’s from the HBO show Entourage drive during the opening of the show. There’s something about those long, lean land yachts that are just so cool.

My dreams of actually owning and driving these cars will have to wait a little while longer so maybe I will pack up my lawn chair and head curbside. With the Woodward Dream Cruise along Woodward and Back to the Bricks in Flint on Saturday, every car from a Model T to a Ferrari and then some can be admired. It sounds like a fun way to spend a day but I think I’ll wait to the actual event on Saturday to go watch traffic.
